The potential settlement, announced on April 15, covers Albertsons and its subsidiaries, which include Safeway and Vons in California. Attorneys general from California, Colorado, Illinois, and Oregon led the multistate negotiations, according to the California AG's office.

"This agreement is part of our ongoing fight to bring help and healing to communities harmed by the opioid crisis," Bonta said. "The California Department of Justice has worked closely with our coalition partners to hold corporate actors accountable for fueling this public health crisis."

While the parties have agreed on the total payment amount, the AG's office said important negotiations remain, including with respect to injunctive relief.
