The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is investigating the death of Lucien Colon, who died on April 2, 2026 following an encounter with New York City Police Department officers in the Bronx. The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. when NYPD officers went to an apartment to arrest Colon.

According to the Attorney General's office, officers entered Colon's apartment and encountered him in a bedroom with the door open. Police said Colon had a gun and allegedly raised what appeared to be a weapon at the officers. One officer discharged his service weapon, striking Colon, who was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers recovered an object that looked like a gun at the scene.

The investigation falls under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which requires OSI to assess every incident where a police officer or peace officer may have caused a person's death by an act or omission. The statute applies regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, and whether the deceased person was armed, unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated.

OSI conducts a preliminary assessment of each reported incident to determine whether an officer may have caused the death. If the assessment indicates potential officer involvement, OSI proceeds with a full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Attorney General's office emphasized that the facts released are preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. No additional details about the nature of the arrest warrant or the specific circumstances leading to the police response were immediately available.
