The partnership deploys prosecutors and resources to enhance deterrence, prevention, investigation, and prosecution efforts as Miami prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and other major events.

Attorney General James Uthmeier stated that human traffickers exploit large crowds and global events to gain new victims. He said his office is partnering with Fernandez Rundle to bring their offices together to fight against human trafficking.

State Attorney Fernandez Rundle noted that as millions of visitors recognize Miami-Dade County as a destination for national and international events, traffickers also see the community as a target. She said the partnership strengthens efforts to arrest and prosecute traffickers and sends a clear message that exploiting children and vulnerable youth will not be tolerated.

Through the Memorandum of Understanding, the Office of Statewide Prosecution becomes a member of the Human Trafficking Task Force. The agreement provides $1.5 million in operational funds to prevent, deter, investigate, and prosecute human trafficking and related organized crime.

Prosecutors from both offices will be cross-designated to provide single- and multi-circuit jurisdiction. This ensures human traffickers are not outside the reach of the Task Force's authority.

Statewide Prosecutor Brad McVay said collaboration between law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities is critical when combating human trafficking. He expressed confidence that lives will be saved through the partnership as Miami prepares to host multiple large-scale events.

The Miami-Dade area has already hosted the Orange Bowl, the NHL Winter Classic, and the NCAA Football Championship this year. Upcoming events include the World Baseball Classic, the Miami Open, Ultra Music Festival, the PGA Tour, the F1 Miami Grand Prix, the NASCAR Cup Series Championship, and the G20 Summit.

Rodney Barreto, Co-Chair of the Miami Host Committee for the FIFA World Cup, applauded the Attorney General's participation in the anti-human trafficking program. He said the threat of human trafficking during the World Cup will be addressed with seriousness and resolve.

The public is urged to report any information or suspicions of human trafficking to Florida's statewide human trafficking hotline at 855-FLA-SAFE.
