NEW YORK (LN) — U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon on Tuesday ordered a discovery conference for May 13 to resolve a dispute between two major publishers and an artificial intelligence startup over the use of their copyrighted material.

The order sets a 3:30 p.m. hearing via Microsoft Teams to address letters filed outlining their disagreements.

Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster filed suit against Perplexity AI, alleging the company used their content in its generative AI models.

The publishers argue that Perplexity’s search engine infringes on their copyrights and misappropriates their content.

Perplexity has defended its practices, arguing that its use of the publishers' data constitutes fair use.

The parties must submit an appearance sheet providing contact information for the attorneys who will speak at the conference.

The public can listen to the proceedings by dialing a conference number provided in the court's order.
